reason, haunted
White's fallen
White to move.
Black's fallen
Resurrection, in one breath

A turn is one decision: move, or pray — not both. Instead of moving, if you have fallen pieces you may roll two dice — one names a file B–G, the other a rank 2–7 — together a square in the inner 6×6 grid. If that square is occupied (by anyone), your most recently fallen piece returns there as yours, and whatever it displaces joins the head of its owner's fallen queue. If the square is empty, nothing happens — and you've spent your turn on the gamble. The board's border is unreachable, and therefore safe. (You can't pray your way out of check — answer it with a move.)
